Driving from the UK

Driving in France is usually a pleasure with good roads and less traffic than in the UK. We tend to use the channel tunnel as we travel with our pet Labrador and have found the best route to the area is from Calais via Rouen, Le Mans (not the middle weekend in June of course!), Tours and Poiters, this takes upwards of 9 hours depending on the number of stops you make. Typical times from the ferry ports are around 8 hours from Cherbourg, 7½ hours from Dieppe, 7 hours from Le Havre and 6½ hours from Caen - again all depending on conditions and breaks. If you're going to be using the toll roads (Péage) then we highly recommend getting a Sanef toll tag. This enables the tolls to be charged to your credit card and you can have the pleasure of driving through the 'toll tag' lanes while there are long queues of people fumbling for change in the other lanes - see www.saneftolling.co.uk
